The Truth About Truth

I saw this quotation today:
A good novel tells us the truth about its hero; but a bad novel tells us the truth about its author.
– G. K. Chesterton

It doesn’t resonate with me. Why must a bad novel tell the truth about anything? It may tell us something about the author, but it may not be the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?
